How To Get To Whittier AK
How to get to Whittier Alaska be it by car, train, boat, floatplane or cruise ship.
- Driving to Whittier
- Driving to Whittier has been possible sense the state modified the Alaska Railroad tunnel back in 2000.
But it's still something that you need to plan out as this tunnel is shared between the general road traffic
and the trains that service Whittier. So what does this mean? Well, when the trains are using this one lane
tunnel, traffic is held at both ends to allow the train to pass. Also this tunnel as noted above is a one
lane tunnel that allows traffic to flow only one direction at a time. It changes in direction every half hour
to allow traffic to move in both directions. Be sure to allow extra time to allow for a possible delay from
this minor stipulation.
Driving time from Anchorage to Whittier averages around 1 and ½ hours depending upon when you reach the
Whittier tunnel entrance. Traffic through the tunnel is limited to one direction and alternates on ½
hour intervals.
- Whittier Tunnel Fee is $12.00 for passenger cars, trucks and recreational vehicles 28 feet or less in length.
- The fee for vehicles towing trailers or cars is $20.00 as is the fee for RV's over 28 feet.
- Aditional fees for larger or oversize vehicles are posted at the toll booth.
- Take the Alaska Railroad from Anchorage to Whittier.
- Boating in Prince William Sound.
- Fly in to Whittier in a small floatplane.
- Very popular these days are the cruise ships that arrive from places like Southeast Alaska or as far away
as Seattle Washington.
