Whittier tunnel open to traffic!

Whittier Tunnel Update, May 11, 2009

After a rock slide closed the Whittier tunner to road traffic back on April 13, 2009 highway crews have cleared the rock from the road and also followed through with some additional blasting to eliminate some additional areas of concern from the roadway.

During the closure, traffic in and out of Whittier was limited to trains opperated by the Alaska Railroad. Thanks to the State of Alaska, all fees were waived for the duration of the closure. Now that the road has reopened, I hope everyone remembers the gracious assistance from everyone at the Alaska Railroad in this time of need.

In time for the start of our big summer recreation season, It's time to get back to the business of being Alaskans and head on down to Whittier for a little of what we Alaskans have always done best.
